Cultivating Peace

August Focus of the Month

“When you open yourself to the continually changing, impermanent, dynamic nature of your own being and of reality, you increase your capacity to love and care about other people and your capacity to not be afraid. You’re able to keep your eyes open, your heart open, and your mind open. And you notice when you get caught up in prejudice, bias, and aggression. You develop an enthusiasm for no longer watering those negative seeds, from now until the day you die. And, you begin to think of your life as offering endless opportunities to start to do things differently.” ― Pema Chödrön, Practicing Peace in Times of War

August is the month when, in the northern hemisphere, summer reaches its zenith and its “august” nature is on full display. The word august has many related meanings: marked by dignity of inspiration awe and reverence, welcoming respect of age, character or what may have been learned through experiences of life itself. We may encounter those in our life that are courageous, life- enhancing, fair-minded, honorable and would even be thought of having wisdom. It would be considered august in which one has earned reverence and respect. We then may perhaps have certain morals and values as we embark upon our life’s journey. Through presence we are able to model these qualities for others to do what is right in the face of injustice, turmoil or war to any degree. Where is there awe and reverence in your life? This is a good time to recognize what is lighting up these states for you and stirring you to come into your own dignity or august nature. Consider being the change in which you wish to see in the world.  Open your heart to transformation.
