December Subject of the Month ~ Svadhyaya ~ The Study of One’s Self

One of the 8 limbs of yoga is the Niyamas.  The Niyamas are observances and personal discipline.  One of the 5 Niyamas is Svadhyaya. The study of the self.   In the practice of asana (postures) we observe ourselves on a physical plane.  We become aware as we struggle to learn postures, experiencing awkwardness, discomfort, unfamiliarity, and resistance.  We begin to watch and observe our bodies in which we are tight , weak and out of alignment.  This begins the process inward and the stages of reflection and meditation.  This takes willingness, commitment, and focus.

The fruits of our labor brings forth self discovery of the beauty and brilliance of one’s self.  The process of acceptance and gratitude and the courage to allow ourselves to be seen with our own eyes.  Allowing the gift of every time you step upon your  mat be an opportunity to see something new.  The joy of wonderment of exploration within yourself.  And now the journey begins within….

” I Have been a seeker and still am, but I stopped asking the books and the stars, I started listening to the teachings of my soul”  RUMI

” Your vision becomes clear when you look into your heart. Who looks outside dreams. Who looks inside awakens.”  CARL JUNG

” Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom”  ARISTOTLE

Let the discovery begin
