November Pose of the Month ~ Parivrtta Trikonasana ~ Revolve Triangle

Parivrtta Trikonasana ~ Revolve Triangle

  • From Downward Facing Dog, if this is not an option come into Table Top.
  • Step the right foot to the right thumb, spiraling the left foot down, come up off the knee if began from Table Top.
  • Bring the back foot in about 6 inches keeping the foot at about a 45 degree angle so to stabilize and level the hips. Please note this will vary depending on the length of your legs and hamstring flexibility. It will help to release the hamstring by engaging the quadriceps. Be careful not to lock the knees out. This will stop the energy flow and put unnecessary strain on the knee joint.
  • Place your thumb in the crease of your right hip drawing the hip back. This will continue to stabilize the hips.
  • While the back is extended bring the torso forward and hips back to begin to rise up leading with your chest and have the left arm follow to assist with further extension.
  • Once the body is full extended and prepared, begin to hindge forward placing the left hand on a block inside the left foot, on top of the foot, on the outside of the foot with or without a block. Tis will be determined by having a long extended spine with as little of roundedness as possible. It will help to gently draw the shoulder blades together.
  • Be sure to realize that this particular posture is about stabilizing at the hips and spiraling open from the base of the spine outward.
  • Breathe here for 5 breaths. Finish by lifting up and stepping to the front of the mat or to follow with the flow of the practice.
  • Repeat on the left side.
  • Parivrtta Trikonasa stimulates the solar plexus and assists in digestion and helps to massage the vital organs in the body. With deep Ujjayi breath (yogic breathing) and the deep movement this posture helps cleanse and purify to assist in overall healt and well being.
  • Please know that all asanas (postures) assist in overall well being. ¬†Through breath and movement, awareness, and commitment optimal health is available for all.

Enjoy practicing Parivrtta Trikonasana
